Pacific Rim Summer Festival kicks off

Events fill Tofino and Ucluelet calendars

The Pacific Rim Summer Festival is an event/festival organized, arranged, and executed by the Pacific Rim Arts Society.

The festival has had its ups and downs with COVID-19 years, lack of funding and other obstacles that festivals and events must overcome. But, overcome we have.

This year in 2023, The Pacific Rim Arts Society, Pacific Rim Summer Festival is coming back strong. Co-ordinator Liza Smith has been doing a bang-up job locating talent, venues and activities that will capture the interest of all age groups, from children to seniors.

The opening event called Community Kick-Off took place at the Ucluelet Community Centre on July 1 and included daytime events for youth and seniors (free or by donation), evening events for the young at heart 19+ Beach Party (licensed event) and all-day catering by Aud’s First Nation Cuisine Yuułuʔiłʔatḥ- Ucluelet First Nation Welcome as well as Yuułuʔiłʔatḥ Artist Market.

Some events are free and some a small fee at the door ($10 to $20).

Highlights this year include, Ballet Victoria, The Steadies, Murfitt and Main (Blue Grass), Kyle Hensby Band, Johnnie and June Tribute. Local music talents include, Lothar Myck, Rory Henderson (The Blow Holes), The Halibut Cowboys, Brent Halfyard, Russel Roper (Liquid Audio) and Myles Morrison.

Two youth events, one at Common Loaf Bakery in Tofino – youth poetry reading with prizes, the other at PRAS outdoor space – mural painting, youth art market.

Youth events included in the opening, youth Karaoke, bucket drumming, face painting.

Wrap Up Parking Lot Party outside PRAS Orange Door Gallery, includes live music from 10am to 10pm, face painting, artist market and children’s craft table. The Pacific Rim Arts Society hosts four major festivals throughout the year, Missoula Children’s Theatre in January, ArtSplash!
