One of the West Coast’s most active groups celebrated a new accolade.

The Pacific Rim Rotary Club received a Beacon of Warmth Award at the Rotary International District 5020 Conference held at the Semiahmoo Resort in Blaine, Washington on May 2-4, 2024.

Club president Kelly Deakin attended the event and was delighted to accept the award on behalf of Pacific Rim Rotary.

“I was actually taken quite by surprise,” Deakin told the Westerly News. “It’s awarding clubs that serve as beacons of warmth and friendliness in their communities…It means that the local club has represented itself really well within the community and other visiting Rotarians have been really pleased to visit our club and felt very welcomed.”

She added the convention was like a “family reunion” to wrap up the year as presidents and boardmembers will change positions in June.

“It was a really great event, they had some phenomenal speakers,” she said.

Deakin became the local Rotary club’s president last June and her term will end next month, though she plans to stay on the board.

“It has been a little bit of a challenge because we’re a fairly new and small club but, at the same time, it’s been a great learning experience and we’ve got some really great people on our team,” she said. “The whole premise of rotary is to do good in the community and in the world, so that’s basically right up my alley…I’d like to see a lot more good done in the world. I’d like to see a lot more good done in our community. I’d like to see a lot more people step up and help us out to do a lot more good in our community. It’s a passion of mine just to do good.”

She added that anyone interested in joining the club is encouraged to check out its Facebook page and website, www.pacificrimrotary.com, for more information.
