With no candidates willing to put their name on the ballot by Friday’s 4 p.m. deadline, the Alberni Clayoquot Regional District was forced to extend the nomination period for the Electoral Area C Director’s position to Monday, Sept. 12, at 4 p.m.
Anyone interested in running for the director’s seat is encouraged to visit www.acrd.bc.ca for more information or contact the ACRD’s Chief Election Officer Wendy Thomson at elections@acrd.bc.ca or 250-720-2706.
Kel Roberts has served as Electoral Area C’s director since 2018, but decided not to run for re-election.
Roberts told the Westerly News that he sat down with his wife and reflected on the years he’s been involved with public service through police and fire departments as well as the Ministry of Forests and the ACRD.
“I put in 57 years, I think it’s time to retire,” he said.
He added he had put the word out to people encouraging them to run for the seat and was surprised to see the ballot remain empty after Friday’s deadline.
“I am quite surprised actually, but I hope somebody steps up to the plate,” he said.
He said he enjoyed working with the other ACRD directors on projects, like the multi-use path slated to connect Ucluelet to the Pacific Rim National Park Reserve as well as the West Coast Multiplex Society’s efforts to bring an ice rink and swimming pool to the region.
“I found it really interesting for sure and I hope somebody is willing to take it on because it’s a huge area and a really worthwhile area to be involved with,” he said. “It’s extremely important and it’s important to be involved, to have your input into it and to push forward.”
