It’s been four months since the Alberni-Clayoquot Regional District (ACRD) rolled out the Sort’nGo three-stream cart collection service for west coast communities. It’s time to celebrate! Since Dec. 5, we have collected 80 tonnes of organic waste material. That’s the equivalent of more than 20 Orca whales! This means more than 37 per cent of household waste has been diverted from the landfill compared to last year!
Always room for improvement
Although our tonnage is looking great, contamination is still a problem. Here are a couple reminders for folks to consider.
- Do not put organics in any plastic bag, compostable plastic, or biodegradable plastic inside the organics cart – paper fibre only
- As people start yard waste spring cleanups, please remember no oversized branches – maximum two feet long and two inches in diameter
- Be careful with compostable take-away containers – not everything is accepted in the curbside program – items like compostable plastic clam shells and plastic beverage cups are not accepted
Earth Day
Earth Day is on April 22 and this year the theme is “Invest in Our Planet.”
We can all do our part, and you can participate picking up litter along your route as you bike or walk. Consider making a pledge such as “make memories, not waste” to reduce your footprint and create memories in the process. So many options are available, and you’re only limited by your imagination!
