This is a busy time of year for school athletics as our winter seasons are drawing to a close with Island and provincial championships.
We've had a great season to this point, with lots of fun trips, matches won and medals earned. Most recently we had a very solid showing at the Island Championships on February 15th. The girls team finished in a tie for 1st place team standings but were awarded 2nd place based on the number gold medals won, while the boys took home fifth. Individually, our kids wrestled some great matches with Gordy Taylor, Kyle Grilli and Autumn Irwin bringing home Island Champion titles. Earning silver medals were Heather Morrison, Marlowe Mathieson, Mayben Crabbe, Everett Watson and Lukas Bewick, with Murrin Bewick placing 4th, Van Law and Maija Watson 5th and Ellie Law 6th. In the midst of the wrestling practices and school
work our team has also been busy fundraising to get to the provincials in Prince George February 26-March 2nd. Once again we would like to offer a big thanks to the Wick Inn/Long Beach Golf Course pro-am for supporting our athletes but also we would like to thank all of you who bought raffle tickets and had your cars washed in the rain to help get our kids to the Provincial Championships. Congratulations goes to James Messenger, a wrestling coach from Port Alberni, who won the $1000 raffle prize. Our team is now prepping to trek into the frozen middle of BC to test themselves against the best competition in the province. Look forward to next week's edition of the Westerly for all the results and some action photos.
