Tofino has declared a formal call out for artists to shape up the creative value of its community hall space by adding a splash of colour that represents the West Coast’s dynamic texture and the district is expecting a long line of submissions to form.

The district is currently asking for proposals from artists from across the region to design and create a permanent art installation above the hall’s front doors.

“The District of Tofino and Public Art Advisory Committee intends the sign to be a welcome greeting for all who approach the building, and a piece that cultivates a sense of who we are collectively as a community. The community hall sign is meant to help identify the building and represents the intended use of this shared community space, Tofino’s manager of community services Cindy Hutchison told the Westerly News via email.

“The District invites new and professional individual artists to apply, and also encourages applications from artists who wish to collaborate on a proposal.”

Hutchinson explained that the installation project is part of the district’s Arts and Culture Master Plan.

“Public art serves to respond to, and reflect the enjoyment of Tofino’s natural environment, enrich Tofino’s public spaces for the pleasure of all, promote interaction with art in daily life and enhances the pedestrian/cyclist experience,” she wrote. “Public art encourages meaningful community dialogue and idea exchange that supports cultural vibrancy which broadens cultural tourism and reinforces the community’s cultural identity and civic pride.”

Anyone interested in applying is encouraged to check out the district’s website at www.tofino.ca for more information and any questions can be directed to Events and Culture Programmer Karen Habib at 250-725-3229 ext. 604 or khabib@tofino.ca.

The submission deadline is Oct. 20.

“The District is inviting proposals from both new and experienced artists living within Tofino, Ucluelet and Area C. This is such an amazing opportunity to create art for the enjoyment of all, while being financially compensated and supported for the work you are creating,” Hutchison wrote.

She added the region has a strong arts community and the district is excited to offer the opportunity for them to express themselves.

“The region has always been a draw for creatives. Providing space that allows community members to express themselves enriches the shared experiences for us all,” she wrote.

Artists looking for ideas can find them at the district’s website, which features past public art projects the district has supported.

The district is also currently seeking an artist representative to join the Public Art Advisory Committee and anyone interested in applying for the position can apply on the district’s website by Oct. 6.
