Downtown Nanaimo will hum with the sound of more than 100 youth string players this weekend.

The West Coast Youth Fiddle Summit will return to Nanaimo from Friday through Sunday, April 12-14, for a weekend full of workshops, master classes and outdoor performances.

A release for the event noted that the youth fiddle summit, which started in Nanaimo in 2019 by local string teachers Trish and Geoff Horrocks – also the co-directors of the award-winning youth fiddle ensemble Fiddelium – was created as an event to build connections between youth string players from across Western Canada. It also gives students the opportunity to be coached by some of the country’s best ensemble directors.

For the fifth annual summit, the release noted that there will be 103 young musicians representing Fiddelium, Yukon Fiddleheads, qathet Fiddlers, Calgary Fiddlers and the North Shore Celtic Ensemble.

The summit culminates in a final concert on Sunday, April 14, at 1:30 p.m. at Vancouver Island Conference Centre. Tickets for the concert can be purchased at www.eventbrite.com.
