The Tofino Saltwater Classic fishing derby has been cancelled this year, but event organizers are still hoping to keep the event’s impressive fundraising tally growing.

The fishing derby launched by former Vancouver Canuck star Brendan Morrison was set to make its 13th annual appearance from July 7-9. The event has raised over $725,000 for local programs and initiatives since its inception.

“We’re sad to announce that the fishing derby portion of the Tofino Saltwater Classic is cancelled for this year due to a decrease in registrations, most likely from the ongoing road closures caused by the wildfires on Highway 4,” read a June 26 post on the event’s Facebook page. “This year, funds to support the event’s community beneficiaries will be raised via an online silent auction (so stay tuned!!), coupled with private donations.”

Morrison has assured that he will still host his annual Kids Ball Hockey Tournament on Friday, July 7 at 10 a.m. at Wickaninnish Community School.

The silent auction will run until July 18 and more information can be found at www.tofinosaltwaterclassic.com.
