July 20, 1949 - April 9, 2020
It is with broken hearts that we announce the passing of Judith Cathrine Hansen (nee Flagel) on April 9th, 2020. Judy was surrounded by her family when she peacefully came to the end of her 3 year battle with cancer. She leaves behind her husband of 47 years, Donald Hansen, children Karl Hansen (Lori Byers) and Trudy Barr (Dan), grandchildren Kaitlan Hansen (Shelden Ladoski), Bryn Hansen, Kylie, Calum & Grayden Barr, along with her brother Jack Flagel.
Judy was born in 1949 in Chilliwack, BC and when she was 10 her family settled in Hope, BC. After high school, she attended nurses' training at Nanaimo Vocational College, graduating in 1970. Upon completing her practicum in Port Alberni, Judy took a position in Tofino where she met and married the love of her life, Don Hansen. After the birth of their first child, Karl, they moved to Ucluelet and embarked on a joint venture at McCallum Sales where Judy ran the store and Don bought fish. For several years they spent their summers in Ucluelet and their winters in Tofino. During this time their second child Trudy was born and in 1981 they moved permanently to Tofino. For 18 years Judy was a hardworking, loyal presence at the Pacific Sands Beach Resort before finishing her working career at Long Beach Market.
Judy was energetic and a social person. She was drawn to the social aspect of slowpitch, more so than the sport. Her enthusiasm was on full display every Halloween which she embraced with a fun loving spirit. Judy wasn't shy about expressing her point of view, but was always open to listening to what others had to say. In her quiet moments she tried to garden and walk on the beach.
Judy was a passionate woman who loved her husband, kids and grandkids with all her heart and she was always there for them. She had a deep fondness and love for her nieces and nephews and was blessed with a wonderful and supportive network of friends. Her love of life was a force to be reckoned with and to the end she never gave up wanting more of it. Her tenacity and spirit will live on everyday in our thoughts and in our hearts.
