Westerly News up for three Ma Murray community newspaper awards

The Westerly News is one of three finalists in its circulation size for a 2022 BCYCNA Newspaper Excellence Award.

The Tofino-Ucluelet Westerly News has been named a finalist in three categories in the 2022 BC and Yukon Community Newspaper Association (BCYCNA) Ma Murray Awards.

The awards honour and celebrate the work of community journalists across the province for advertising, photography, writing and overall newspaper excellence.

For the third time, the Westerly is up for the Newspaper Excellence Award in its circulation class. In 2019 and 2020 it received back-to-back Silvers. This year, it goes for Gold against east-central B.C.’s Rocky Mountain Goat and the Eagle Valley News out of Sicamous.

Westerly News editor Andrew Bailey is a finalist in the Environmental Writing Award category for his reporting on black bearsand the deadly season they had on the West Coast due to unnatural food attractants.

Community reporter and photojournalist Nora O’Malley is up for the Spot News Photo Award, under 10,000 (circulation) category, for her photo titled ‘Trudeau’s ill-timed Tofino vacation’, which was taken on Canada’s inaugural statutory day of Truth and Reconciliation.

The BCYCNA award winners will be announced May 14 at the Ma Murray Awards Gala at the River Rock Casino Resort in Richmond.
