The ACRD board is excited to roll out new Sort’nGrow buckets that can be filled with compost at the West Coast Landfill.

Compost is officially for sale at the West Coast Landfill.

The Alberni-Clayoquot Regional District recently announced that the Sort’n’Go organic waste collection that launched in the Tofino-Ucluelet region in 2022 is now creating “good quality” compost that meets Provincial Organic Matter Recycling Regulations Class A standards.

“It’s great that we are able to collect organic waste from West Coast communities and offer it back to them as good quality compost,” said ACRD board chair John Jack. “Not only does this celebrate the success of the Sort’n’Go program, but it is also an example of what is possible in a circular economy where waste reduction efforts benefit the whole community.”

The compost went on sale at the landfill on Sept. 25 at $5 per 20-litres for residents who bring their own buckets and $20 per 20-litres with the cost of a Sort’n’Grow bucket.

“Each bucket is made from recycled rope and netting collected from the Ocean Legacy Ocean Plastic Depot located at the West Coast Landfill as part of the ongoing partnership,” the announcement states. “The buckets are multi-purpose and ideal for larger kitchen organic waste collection containers ‘kitchen catchers.’ The best part is once the buckets are at the end of life, they can be brought back to the Ocean Plastic Depot to get recycled again.”

Bulk purchases are also available for $50 per yard.

The announcement suggests Sort’nGrow compost is “high in nutrients,” and should be mixed at a 4:1, soil to compost ratio.

“We are pleased to be able to launch this program so soon after the West Coast started using Sort’nGo Curbside Pickup,” said the ACRD’s solid waste project coordinator Jodie Frank. “For a small fee, West Coast residents now have access to compost that is the result of organic waste material from their communities that was diverted from the landfill.”

Anyone seeking more information about the new compost on offer is encouraged to reach out to the the West Coast Landfill at 250-726-2727.
