Tofino's municipal council is less than pleased with the glacial pace of the provincial government's response to concerns about the safety of the road coming into town.
Tofino's municipal council has been clamouring for the Province to address the highway's deteriorating surface and the fact that it is narrow and shoulderless-creating risky business for bicyclists and pedestrians-but the Province has not exactly swooped in to save the day.
During last week's regular council meeting, Osborne said she recently spoke with the ministry of transportation and "ministry staff made no indication that any major projects are underway to address the road approach into Tofino."
She assured road improvements will be a key point of emphasis during the gauntlet of meetings Tofino will run at September's Union of BC municipalities convention.
"(By) patching things and addressing it segment by segment it's going to take years to achieve what we'd all like to see which is a wider road that's safer, especially for cyclists and increased tourist traffic," she said.
Council has asked for information on what maintenance the province is responsible for and has also asked for clarification on road maintenance, brush-cutting schedules and roadwidth so they can hit the UBCM meeting well versed enough to make their case solid.
After a discussion during council's June 17 regular meeting, district staff planned to pepper the province with questions about road standards and maintenance schedules and to highlight the safety concerns of debris being caused by the road's deterioration.
