The Tofino Volunteer Fire Department spent their Christmas morning tackling a fire at Crabapple Campground that displaced three residents.

Tofino Fire Chief Brent Baker told the Westerly News the local fire crew responded to the scene at 2:26 a.m.

“We are extremely fortunate to have the dedicated team that we do. Even at 2:30 in the morning on Christmas Day, we had 14 members of the volunteer fire department respond to that structure fire. They dealt with it in a very professional way,” he said. “We are really fortunate that they are so committed and so passionate and constantly looking out for the best of the community.”

He said the fire was extinguished at 6:32 a.m.

The community quickly rallied around the three residents who lost their home in the fire, with a GoFundMe campaign more than doubling its $4,000 goal, reaching $8,064 as of Jan. 8.

“Any donations will be split with 3 roommates who are also rebuilding from scratch. The main goal is that people get back on their feet with the necessities to keep their mental health stable,” reads the GoFundMe campaign organized by Brock Shillington.

It adds that no one was injured in the fire, but many items were lost and the home was not insured.
