Ucluelet’s deer population doesn’t always play nice so locals are encouraged to keep their pets close.

A Ucluetian canine is recovering from an apparent kerfuffle with a deer last month.

On March 22, police received a report alleging a local dog had been stabbed by a knife.

The dog was taken to a veterinary hospital on March 23 where its owner was advised the wound was most likely caused by a deer’s antler, according to Const. Matthew Crist of the Ucluelet RCMP.

“It’s a reminder for people to keep tabs on their dogs, especially at night, and not let them roam at large because there is wildlife out there that could cause some harm to a dog,” Crist said.
