B.C. records no new COVID-19 deaths for the first time in weeks

Good news comes despite 11 new test-positive cases in B.C. in the past 24 hours

Eleven more British Columbians have tested positive for the novel coronavirus, COVID-19.

Despite the new cases, provincial health officer Dr. Bonnie Henry announced a glimmer of hope on Tuesday (May 26) as B.C. works to flatten the curve amid reopening: that there were no new deaths in the past 24 hours, marking the first day with no fatalities from the virus in several weeks.

“Today, we’re able to report no new deaths for the first time in quite a few weeks, and we want to be able to do this every day so no more families have to deal with the loss of somebody they love,” Henry said.

Health Minister Adrian Dix reiterated how welcomed the report was.

“We’re really grateful not to have to announce any new deaths today. We acknowledge the 161 people who have passed away and their families and the struggles that they continue to be going through as they grieve.”

B.C. currently has 258 active confirmed cases. Thirty-seven people are battling the contagious respiratory illness in hospital with seven of those in intensive care.

Meanwhile, 2,122 have fully recovered from the virus.

Henry also confirmed that an outbreak at Richmond Hospital has now been declared to be over. No new community outbreaks were announced Tuesday.
