Courtenay-Alberni constituents on the West Coast will have a chance to watch a livestream of the all-candidates' meeting from Port Alberni tonight, April 15.
The Ucluelet and Tofino chambers of commerce are supporting the Port Alberni event instead of trying to hold one of their own on the coast, Tofino chamber executive director Samantha Hackett said.
The event will be livestreamed starting at 6 p.m. through Geoff Johnson's Ukee Tube on YouTube. Johnson said he received support from all three chambers of commerce as well as the teachers' union to be able to broadcast the meeting from the RimRock Casino's Cathedral Grove Room in Port Alberni.
Seven candidates are vying for the federal Member of Parliament seat in Courtenay-Alberni: Brian Cameron (Liberal), Thomas Gamble (People's Party of Canada), incumbent Gord Johns (NDP), Teresa Knight (Animal Protection Party of Canada), Chris Markevich (Green Party), Kris McNichol (Conservatives) and Jesse Musial (Christian Heritage Party).
McNichol declined an invitation to participate in the all-candidates' meeting. He will instead be attending a public safety town hall meeting in Nanoose Bay.
The all-candidates' meeting in Port Alberni is being co-hosted by the Alberni Valley chamber and Alberni Valley Transition Town. Retired journalist and AVTT member Michael Youds will be moderating the meeting along with PEAK FM news director David Wiwchar, who will be asking candidates a series of questions relevant to the Alberni Valley.
Doors to the event open at 6 p.m. and the meeting gets underway at 6:30 p.m.
