WEST COAST HISTORY: The Westerly News looks back at Adopt a Salmon Day

The Westerly News looks back at the history of Ucluelet and Tofino

Have you ever adopted a baby salmon? Kids in Ucluelet and Tofino have.

In June 2014, the Thornton Creek Hatchery opened its doors for the annual Adopt a Baby Salmon Day. Crowds of people from both communities on the West Coast flocked to the hatchery to learn about the life-cycle of salmon and help buckets full of salmon fry on their first journey in Thornton Creek.

One Ucluelet resident brought her four children to the hatchery for this special day. Jennifer Rhodes said when interviewed in 2014 that the event has been a staple for her family for about eight years. Her kids "love to go fishing and it's a great opportunity for them to learn the life-cycle of the fish and how they get from the river to the ocean," Rhodes said.
