In late May 2014, with tourist season coming in hot and heavy, visitors' services at the "junction" seemed uncertain.
The Pacific Rim Visitors' Centre (PRVC) sits at the junction of Highway 4 and Pacific Rim Highway as one approaches the coast from Port Alberni. In the May 28, 2014 edition, editor Andrew Bailey wrote of the difficulties Ucluelet Chamber of Commerce were having and how those challenges could potentially affect the PRVC.
The Ucluelet chamber was thinking of opting out of the PRVC, and Tourism Tofino's general manager at the time, Kirsten Soder, said they could not jump in and take over. Tourism Tofino was already running one visitors' centre and had the ChesterVan to alleviate summertime pressure on businesses downtown. "...we just can't justify a third," she noted.
In a 'Closer Look' feature inside the same edition, Bailey noted the Ucluelet chamber was going to ask the District of Ucluelet for a rent break. The rent for PRVC at the time was $1,700 per month.
