In January 2016 a five-metre-deep sinkhole opened up in the middle of Wick Road, forcing the closure of the access road to Wickaninnish Beach for almost six months.

Crews finally had the sinkhole repaired, filled and the road re-opened for mid-June when a Westerly News photographer captured the joy of tourists Kyle and Sarah Nilsson from Steamboat Springs, Colorado, as they used their skimboards along the edge of the water.
