Tofino’s Fish and Loaves Humane Society provides free food handouts every Tuesday at the Royal Tofino Legion parking lot from 10:30 a.m. to noon. The free community food drop includes bread, a variety vegetables, fruit, and sometimes dairy. It is open to everyone.

Society president John Enns said anyone needing emergency food or other essential goods delivered is welcome to call him at: 250-726-5017.

“One of the things that I’m noticing more and more is that people I recognize from local shops and working in local places are coming now because they don’t have work and they don’t have that much money. They are needing every bit that they can get,” said Enns.

Thanks to the generosity of many West Coasters, the GoFundMe ‘Food for Tofitians in Tuff Times’, launched by Sophie L’Homme nearly one month ago, has raised over $7,500 of its $10,000 goal.

“Tofino has really risen to the challenge,” Enns said. “I really am impressed by the quality and the commitment of many of the local Tofino people.”

He said Jeff Mikus, chef of Surfside and Wildside Grill, regularly donates boxes of potatoes.

“[Mikus] also had a fundraiser and raised over $100 for us,” Enns went on to say.

Tofino’s Fish and Loaves Society has a supportive and collaborative relationship with Food Bank on the Edge Society, which is located in Ucluelet. Food Bank on the Edge distributes hampers on Tuesdays as well. People in Tofino are allowed to go to both, notes Enns, and for that matter people in Ucluelet are allowed to go to the Tofino food handout.

“We don’t discriminate,” Enns said. “And, we don’t make people prove that they are poor. Other places do that, which I find offensive.”

Fish and Loaves is a Christian charity that helps people in need and is there to love people with the love of Christ.

“And, that’s what we try to do. We care about the whole person. Not just their physical needs,” said Enns.

Fish and Loaves is currently researching Food Bank grants to support the growing number of individuals it may need to support. Individual cheque donations to Tofino Fish and Loaves can be mailed to PO box 818, Tofino, V0R 2Z0. For more information visit their Facebook page “Fish and Loaves Tofino”.
