Each year the Westerly News holds a holiday story contest in early December, open to writers of all ages. Prizes are awarded to first and second place winners chosen in four different categories.
For 2024, we challenged writers to include three items in their stories: star, snowman and storm. Here is one of the winning entries.
Once upon a time there were two little boys named Bill and Jill. They were the best snowman builders in Yellowknife. One day a huge, raging storm came and sucked the boys away.
The boys were lost, alone and cold. All they had was a carrot and some coals because they were building snowmen. Suddenly the storm was coming back, but this time less ferocious. There was something glowing inside it. They saw it for a few seconds and then it shot out of the storm and landed a few feet away from them.
They walked over to it and saw that it was a star, but they knew that this star was a wishing star. So they made a snowman with the carrots and the coals, they named it Frosty and put the star on top of its head.
They slept beside the snowman in the woods and they wished on the star that in the morning when they woke up, that they would be home again.
When they woke up they heard their names being called. They saw that they were back in their village perfectly safe with their moms and dads running towards them and hugging them tight. To celebrate their return they all built snowmen in the village.
The boys learned that when a storm comes through the village they go inside and stay safe with their family in the bunkers.
