Each year the Westerly News holds a holiday story contest in early December, open to writers of all ages. Prizes are awarded to first and second place winners chosen in four different categories.
For 2024, we challenged writers to include three items in their stories: star, snowman and storm. Here is one of the winning entries.
It was two days until Christmas! There has been a storm going on for 2 whole days! It was already afternoon when the storm passed.
There was a lot of snow, so I put on my snow gear and headed outside. I decided to make a snowman. By the time I finished it was late, so I went inside.
Before I fell asleep, I saw a shooting star and wished for something magical to happen.
The next morning, I ate breakfast and went outside. I looked for my snowman, but I only saw a trail leading down to the pond. My snowman was skating.
The snowman skated over towards me he said "HI, my name is Snowball”.
I froze.
“I’m Coral, want to have a snowball fight?”
“Sure.” And we played in the snow until it was dark, then went inside and went to bed.
The next morning, I woke up I looked out the window and there was Snowball standing there like a normal snowman.
