Each year the Westerly News holds a holiday story contest in early December, open to writers of all ages. Prizes are awarded to first and second place winners chosen in four different categories.
For 2024, we challenged writers to include three items in their stories: star, snowman and storm. Here is one of the winning entries.
Once upon a time, there was a little girl named Stella Goulet. Stella was in grade two at Wickaninnish Community School in Tofino.
Stella loved stars, they were her favourite shape. Every night, Stella would look at the stars and look at the way they twinkled and glimmered.
One special night, it was Christmas Eve and Stella found a star that she loved. On Christmas morning, it was a very stormy Christmas. Stella opened the front door and there was a snowman on her porch!
The snowman was holding Stella’s star that she loved and the snowman was alive because it gave her instructions. The instructions were to take good care of her star, make sure to feed it, play with it and make sure that she didn't lose it.
The snowman told Stella that if she lost her star, she could find it, but she’d never know when or where it would land by her. The snowman promised she would always get it back though.
The snowman was always there even in the middle of August! The snowman was a special snowman when Stella needed a friend. The snowman would come to Stella and she loved having a snowman and a star. Every time Stella got to see them, she would hug them so much and they were two of her favourite friends in the whole world.
Stella never wanted to not see them.
It was still Christmas and it was still stormy, but Stella wanted to play outside. Stella played outside and did some colouring as well that Christmas and made her star and snowman a snack.
Stella would never forget the Christmas her star and snowman came to her, because they’re so special. Stella was so grateful for her star and snowman.
