Ucluelet’s Marine Wild pocket neighbourhood is being heralded as Vancouver Island’s best multi-family townhome development north of the Malahat.

The 16thAnnual Vancouver Island Real Estate Board Commercial Building Awards were announced at an April 14 gala in Nanaimo and Marine Wild took top honours in the Multi-Family Townhome category.

Developer Le Fevre and Company worked with architecture firm Aspire Custom Designs and general contractor AFC Construction to create the West Coast cannery inspired townhomes at 590 Marine Drive.

“Marine Wild is a prime example of how to combine thoughtful design with density in a sensitive way—one that blends with its surroundings while providing housing stock for locals,” read the awards’ official Souvenir Book announcing the winners.

“Taking inspiration from the architecture of the exterior, the interior palette blends organic raw materials with urban industrial accents.”

The VIREB awards celebrated 45 finalists, recognizing commercial, industrial and revenue-producing projects built anywhere between the Malahat to Port Hardy that were completed in 2022. Brechin United Church of Nanaimo earned the Judges’ Choice Best Overall award and Kinetic Construction was named the Construction Company of the Year.

“This event was all about celebrating the best of the best for buildings that were completed in 2022,” said John MacDonald of Business Examiner, which coordinates the event. “These very important buildings need to be celebrated, as it takes a lot of hard work, ingenuity and perseverance to see them completed, from start to finish.”
