BC Hydro: Feb. 16 power outage remains mystery

BC Hydro is still in the dark about why the West Coast was without power for about 5 hours on Sunday Feb. 16.

"We don't know what the cause is," said Hydro spokesperson Ted Olynyk. "We patrolled the lines but there was nothing we could see which would have caused the outage."

Power was cut off to the entire West Coast from around 7 p.m. to midnight and Hydro crews from Ucluelet and Port Alberni patrolled the line in search of an answer.

No answer was found but the line was determined safe to switch back on.

"The system trips out. It's like a (circuit breaker) in your home," Olynyk said. "Before we go and put the circuit breaker on we want to make sure the line is clear...and that there's not further danger to our system or the public if we re-energize it."

He said Hydro employees arrived in short order despite Sutton Pass' snowy conditions and the fact that it was a Sunday night.

"They know there on call and, especially with weather like this, they know that their phone could probably go off," he said.

Just before the power went out on Sunday several Tofitians posted comments on social media stating they had seen a blue flash in the sky.
